WHY choose st. Croix?
St. Croix are a breed of hair sheep that were developed in the Caribbean. Still considered a rare breed in the United States, St. Croix hair sheep are steadily gaining in popularity for the following reasons:
- High parasite resistance. They do not usually have to be dewormed under normal circumstances.
- No shearing necessary. St. Croix shed their undercoats naturally by summer.
- Good temperament. Both rams and ewes are easy to handle and manage and respond well to guardian dogs, donkeys and llamas.
- Great grazers. St. Croix are a great choice for land management as they are non-selective grazers and prefer weeds.
- High lambing percentages. Research shows that St. Croix produce an average 2.1 births per lambing episode. And because they ovulate throughout the year, two lamb crops a year are possible.
- Heat and cold tolerant. St. Croix can be raised in all areas of the United States. They do well in all types of climates: dry, hot desert; cold northern states; humid areas in the south and Hawaii and even the wet, rainy areas of the Pacific Northwest.
